How to keep my dog comfortable and safe on a long cargo flight?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bichon Frise | Female | unspayed | 1 year old | 14 lbs

I am currently in Korea (visiting) when I found a dog I adopted (my intention was to adopt a small dog). I am returning to America next week. Shami will have to be in cargo for about 15 hours. I am so worried. We went to the vet and got an all clear and got her a cage (big enough for her). What can I do to make her flight comfortable? I already know to add food, water, pee pads. What else? A cooling mat? Toys? What can I do to put her at ease? I am really worried she won't make it.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Putting a pet into cargo can be scary, as you cannot check in on them during that time. I recommend providing blankets and toys that may make her feel more comfortable. You can ask your veterinarian for light sedative medications that you can give prior to the flight to help her relax. I hope this is helpful!
