Why is my dog's ear leaking fluid and she's shaking her head?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 8 years and 1 month old | 75 lbs

My dog has been suffering for months due to my injury right before her problem which left me unable to help her physically or financially. She shakes her head or sometimes cries out when her right ear is touched from the back. I can now hear fluid in her ear when she shakes her head and she is often scratching at it. I've done what i can for her but am in tears thinking it's too late. She just woke me, miserable and shaking head. Fluid is coming out of the ear when she shakes head.

Oh dear, this sounds like Katana has a pretty bad ear infection. The fluid coming from her ear, may be discharge from the infection or could be fluid draining from a hematoma (large blood clot) of the ear pinna itself which can sometimes occur due to heavy shaking of the head during a bad ear infection. Hematomas usually need to be drained and bandaged at a veterinarian's office. Ear infections really need to be treated with a veterinarian as well so she can have her ears cleaned really well and get on an antibiotic and topical ear medication. I have included an article below for you for information affording veterinary care with limited funds. I hope this helps! http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/resources/tips/trouble_affording_veterinary_care.html
