Dog coughing, wheezing, collapsing, then recovers. When to worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Female | spayed | 7 years and 2 months old | 35 lbs

My dog, Lola (7y pug), keeps coughing and wheezing and then falling over and squirms trying to get back up. It’s not a siezure or a stroke and she doesn’t have an ear infection. After each episode, she gets up and goes back to whatever she was doing like it never happened. This has been happening for a few months and is slowly becoming more frequent, but not much worse. I’m really worried but I’m not sure if it’s serious enough for an expensive vet visit

Poor Lola! Yes, I definitely think this warrants a vet visit. It certainly isn't normal behavior at all, and it could be that she may have heart disease causing the coughing and wheezing. It could also be due to the heat if it's hot where you are, or a respiratory infection. Because it's becoming more frequent, you should definitely take her into the vet. Try to video an episode to show the vet, and make an appointment for this week. Best of luck, I hope this helps!
