My cat has a new spot on her neck. Is it an injury or infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 13 lbs

I just came home from being away from the weekend and I saw a spot on my cat's neck that wasn't there before I left. I'm very worried and don't know if I should be. I have no idea what it is and my cat won't let me get close enough to it so the picture is the best I can do. I captured the picture while she was eating then she ran away to hide in a different part of my house. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I see what you mean about the spot on Tinker. It could be that he injured himself while you were away, and that is the cause of the spot. I'd keep an eye on it for now. If it gets bigger or doesn't heal, or if you see signs of infection such as redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then I would have him seen by a vet for it. If he will let you, you can gently clean it with warm water and antiseptic soap. Best of luck, I hope this helps!
