My dog can't urinate. Is it kidney failure or a bladder blockage?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 13 years and 4 months old | 80 lbs

My dog has not been able to urinate since 3:30 am today even after getting several cups of water throughout the day. I would like to know if this is a symptom of kidney failure or if it could just be a bladder stone/blockage? She’s on several medications including SMZ-TMP, Previcox, Tramadol

Oh my. If she is straining to go urinate then yes this could definitely be a blockage caused by either a urinary stone or even a bladder mass is possible considering your pets age. I would recommend taking her in to your vet right away if this is the case so that she can get testing (urinalysis +/- abdominal rads) and treatment I hope that Jenna is able to make a full and speedy recovery soon! Best wishes and take care .
