My kitten eats adult cat food. Is it safe? How do I prevent this?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 3 months and 15 days old | 10 lbs

My kitten loves eating our adult cats food even when her own food is right in front of her. Is there anything we can do to prevent this and is it dangerous for her health?

No it is not dangerous for her health. You can feed them separately to where your kitten will not scavenge your older cat's food. She is taking the older cat's example in what is edible or not by copying her. This is normal. You can add a bit of your older cat's food in hers so she gets the taste. It is not a problem.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This can be prevented by feeding them separately. This is not going to be harmful to Mimi. However, it is important to feed her a kitten diet just because it contains the necessary nutrients for appropriate growth that the adult diet may lack. Good luck and have a great day!
