My cat lost much weight, vet says normal. Should I ask for tests?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 6 years and 3 months old

Thanks to your good advice i took my cat to our vet because of weight loss(he was around 9kg in the winter, now he's around 4kg),but the vet told me there's no need of checking, because he looks healthy and it's normal in the summer to lose weight but I still think it's too much?is it possible the weight loss really to be only from the summer and because he's very active cat, always in move,he almost doesn't stop walking or I should continue to be concerned and for what tests I have to ask, thank'u

Weight loss is possible due to increased activity, but 9kg to 4kg is more drastic than I would expect. I would discuss doing bloodwork with your vet. Increased activity and weight loss is common in cats with hyperthyroidism. Weight loss can also be caused by kidney disease and diabetes. All 3 of these conditions can be diagnosed with simple bloodwork (CBC, chemistry, thyroid panel) and urinalysis.
