My dog reverse sneezes, honks, and has mucus. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Puggle | Male | neutered | 9 years and 11 months old | 40 lbs

My puggle is constantly reverse sneezing, (it sounds kind of like a goose honk followed by some hacking), and he also constantly sneezes mucus. It bothers both him and us and I don’t know what this is caused by, and how to prevent it from happening or even stop it completely. What can I do to help stop this? Thanks!

Some cases of reverse sneezing in dogs are related to allergies. You may want to discuss using an anti-histamine with your vet. If you think there is a possibility that it isn't a reverse sneeze, I would discuss with your vet possible causes of a honking cough. There are several things that could cause this, including collapsing trachea, heart disease, and lung disease. X-rays may be able to diagnose some of these conditions.
