Guinea pig hooting sound: Is it a symptom of a heart problem?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Unknown - Small Animal | Male | unneutered

I recently picked up my guinea pig Archie like 5 minutes ago and laid him on my bed and he started to make a hooting sound out of no where and it really alerted me because he isn’t really vocal so any little sound he makes I try to examine and I was reading stuff online saying that hooting could be an underlying cause of a heart problem. Is that correct? Should I be worried?

Yes, you are correct. Hooting can be a symptom of heart disease in guinea pigs. I suggest you take Archie to a veterinarian that is well versed in treating guinea pigs to get him examined. This is something that you need to get diagnosed as soon as possible in order to start treatment (if any is available for whatever ailment he has). It may be nothing but it is better to be safe than sorry. I don't know if you have a vet that you are already using but if not, here are a couple I found in your area that treat guinea pigs: ( https://www.ambassadorvet.com/veterinary-services/services-for-birds-and-exotics/ ) ( https://harboranimalhospital.com/service-category/exoticpets/ ) Hope this helps. Best wishes.
