My kitten jerks awake, disoriented, urinates. Is it seizures?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 3 days old | 4 lbs

Today and yesterday my 3 month old kitten has suddenly jerked awake, fell from where he was sleeping, and immediately after runs around disoriented and urinates. He also seems to have a painful sounding meow (deep, loud, and like nothing I had ever heard from him before). After a few minutes he’s fine. He also twitches frequently every time he sleeps and has startled himself awake, just not as dramatically. I’m wondering if he could have had seizures today and yesterday.

Hello, sorry to hear about Indie. It does not sound like your typical seizure. It sounds more like he may be dreaming and waking up abruptly from these dreams. However, the disorientation and urinating, do sound a bit unusual and could be associated with something else. I would recommend recording the episodes if they continue to occur and show them to your veterinarian to see if they appear more like primarily neurologic events vs just a bad dream. Also monitor for other general signs of ill ness such as a decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, or lethargy. If you note any of these, then have him evaluated by your veterinarian. Hope this helps and best of luck.
