Is it normal for my dog to lose appetite while on kennel cough meds?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 49 lbs

Hi, my dog is a 1-year-old lab with kennel cough he is taking temaril-p and amoxi tri clav with some bologna and peanut for about 3 days now. he is drinking a lot of water but other than that he ate a small amount of food (about half a dog bowl) he did poop a full stool and pee's often. His coughing has also ceased when he is on the medication. Is it normal for him to lose his appetite? He is still constantly drinking water and eating the bologna and peanut butter I provided with the medication.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The increased drinking is secondary to the Temaril-p which can cause that. I am concerned that his loss of appetite is likely due to the antibiotics. For that reason, if he is otherwise doing fine, what I would recommend is that you contact your veterinarian to see if that seems likely based on the rest of his medical history and also to see if they would consider discontinuing the antibiotics at this time to see if his appetite resumes. Good luck and have a good night!
