Our 3 month old puppy just got over Parvo after an 8 day hospitalization stay. He is home now and we have a fully vaccinated 5 year old dog. The puppy is still weak and we only allow it to go to the bathroom in a specific area or the yard. I’m worried about my 5 year old getting parvo as he is sniffing the puppy occasionally and drank from the same water bowl which I have since rectified. It’s very difficult keeping the two dogs apart. Who worried should I be?

If your five-year-old dog is up-to-date on all his vaccinations, it is very unlikely that he contracts parvo from your puppy. At this stage your puppy still needs to rest so should not engage in exhaustive play with your older dog, so watch them a little bit so you can slow them down if they get too wild.

If your six year old dog is fully vaccinated, it's extremely unlikely that he will contract parvo even if he is exposed - this is almost always a disease of puppies who have not completed their full vaccine series. If you want to be safe, try not to allow him in areas where you puppy has gone to the bathroom, and bleach anything he has pooped on if possible - since the virus is shed in the feces. Other than that, it's unlikely to cause any problems if you want to let them be together. You can monitor your older dog for any symptoms of a problem, just in case.
