How can I help my skittish cat overcome fear of human contact?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Female | spayed | 1 year and 3 months old | 12 lbs

Emmy is really skittish. She doesn't like being held and runs and hides from us. She loves her siblings and will snuggle with them, but doesn't seem to like human contact. She has never been mistreated and wasn't as skittish as a kitten. (I treat all my cats the same) She IS very food and treat motivated and she'll show up when food is around. Is there anything I can do to make her less of a chicken? She's so beautiful. We just want to love her!!!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! She is gorgeous!! Some cats are just a bit more timid though that tends to get better with time. I would encourage you to speak softly to her and try to avoid sudden movements when interacting with her. There is a product called Feliway which can help cats feel more at ease in situations that are stressful to them and this may be helpful. Good luck and have a great day!
