Why does my cat get tapeworms so quickly when my other cat doesn't?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | 4 years and 2 months old | 14 lbs

I have 2 indoor cats and I regularly give them Advecta. There have been a few times over Jasper’s lifetime (usually once every year or so) that the medicine got applied later than it should’ve or that round of medicine was accidentally skipped. Jasper ALWAYS immediately starts showing signs of tapeworms. I know that cats can get worms from fleas, but it happens SO quickly. And my other cat, Jaxxon, NEVER gets worms. It’s ALWAYS Jasper every time. Is there an underlying problem?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is actually possible and can happen due to a weaker immune system. It is very possible that Jasper is immunocomprised in some way that makes him more predisposed to infections like this. Good luck and have a great day!
