Dog ate sausage, threw up, and breathing strangely. Should I see vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | unspayed | 7 months and 2 days old | 1.5 lbs

Hi I gave my dog half a piece of sausage last night, it was slightly greasy as it was a salt and pepper flavouring sausage I thought no harm would be there so I thought it was ok for her to eat. But this morning I’ve noticed she’s been sick and brought all of the sausage up and also she is now breathing strangely, every now and again she will take deep breaths almost like she’s trying to sneeze or cough. I’m wondering weather I need to take her to the vets or will she be ok by tomorrow ?

I'm wondering if the deep breathing you are seeing is a reverse sneeze, which can be caused by irritation to the nasal passages and throat. I have a link to a video of a reverse sneeze below. If you think this is the case I think it would be okay to monitor Peaches during the day. If she vomits again, does not want to eat, or has diarrhea I'd recommend seeing the vet. If you don't think she is reverse sneezing I would recommend having your vet examine her today - sometimes it can be difficult to determine whether or not a dog is having trouble breathing and it is better to err on the side of caution. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3L4v0W2_Sw
