Why does my puppy poop next to the potty pad instead of on it?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 1 day old | 4 lbs

I have a half chihuahua and shih tzu he’s 12 weeks old and he keeps on peeing off the pad and pooping he goes on the pad when he wants too but why does he poop right next to the pad but not on it?!!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Rallo. At his age, he does not yet have full physical control over his urination and defecation. This does not occur until 4-5 months of age. So at this stage, you are trying to build consistent patterns for potty training. Praise him when he goes and give a treat. Do not punish him for mistakes as this will make him fearful of you. If he is going close to the potty pads at this stage, he is beginning to understand. That is great progress! You can move him closer to the pad when you see him posture to go or add more pads so he has a larger target. Be patient, he will learn. I hope this information helps!
