My Doberman has recurring blisters under his chin. What is it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Doberman Pinscher | Male | unneutered | 11 months and 23 days old | 85 lbs

My doberman has blisters under his mouth that keep coming back. I've taken him to the vet twice, both times they gave him antibiotics and solution to clean the blisters and both times they cleared up for only a few weeks before coming back again. The vets think it's a bacterial infection how can I pinpoint exactly what the problem? Has anybody else ever had this problem?

It sounds like it may be chin acne. This can be caused by using plastic bowls or not cleaning bowls daily. I would recommend switching to metal bowls and clean them daily. If you are already doing this then I would recommend keeping Trigger's chin as clean and dry as possible. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

The blisters on his chin can be caused by a variety of things. Most commonly these are doggy 'acne'. You can try to alleviate this problem by offering food and water out of clean stainless steel bowls. Many veterinary hospitals also sell skin cleaning products with chlorhexidine that will help alleviate the blisters. If these do not go away or worsen it is best to have Rupert seen by a veterinarian.
