My neutered cat humps the air when playing. Is this concerning?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 11 lbs

I've had my rescue cat, Onyx, for almost 1 year (next week). He is a neuteredMale, with IBD, in the time I've had him, he has always gotten excited while playing with his favorite toys or any fabric toy, and proceeds to bite down and mount the air. He yowls loudly and humps the air. I notice him doing this more when I'm not home as often to be with him (my mom is always home, but he is closest to me). He only does this when I play with him. Should I be concerned?

Hi there. I personally, would not be overly concerned with this behavior unless he is being aggressive towards you, other people or other animals. Without actually seeing the behavior myself it it really difficult to say too much though. My recommendation would be to video an episode on your phone and run it by your vet's office to see what they think. I think that will give you the most peace of mind. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
