Caring for a foster kitten with a broken pelvis: holding & cleaning?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 1lb

I just took in a five week foster kitten with a coxofemoral fracture in his pelvis on the right side. Vet said 4 to 6 weeks strict cage rest. He cries often tho. Can I pick him up and hold him? Also I have to Express his bladder sp his genitals get very dirty, can I gently wash them with a cloth? And what do I watch for to ensure he is healing properly?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You can purchase water-less shampoo and bath his hind end. And yes you can pick him up and snuggle. Just do not put him down. To ensure proper healing follow your Vet's recommendations and have him rechecked for X-rays to be sure he is healing properly. It worries me a bit that he can't urinate on his own. That shouldn't be an issue. I would have an X-ray taken at 4 weeks. Good luck!
