Can my dog's Babesia spread to a puppy or cause thrombocytopenia?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 8 months old

There is no garantee that your dog will ever be negative for b.gibsoni. He may become a carrier that shows no signs of illness and can live very well with that. So if he become carrier so if I adopt new puppy can this b.gibsoni paas to him? Also does permanent carrier of b.gibsoni lead to thrombocytopenia ever ? Do we have to take care of his platelets if he become permanent carrier of b.gibsoni?

Babesia is spread most commonly via tick bite or by blood transfusion. A tick must remain attached and feeding for 2-3 days before the organism can be passed on to the dog. It is not likely to pass from dogs living together. The foundation of prevention is aggressive tick control.
