My 10-year-old dog has a cough. Should I get a second opinion?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chesapeake Bay Retriever | Female | unspayed | 10 years and 6 months old | 93 lbs

Just took my 10yr old Chesapeake retriever to the doctor for a cough with a hack, she tested negative for heartworms, Dr didn't hear any fluid on her lungs and her heartbeat sounds smooth and fine. She prescribed a 20mg prednisone steroid to try for a couple weeks to see what that does and then come back if not better for an chest x ray, just wanted to get a 2nd opinion on it.

Hi. A cough can be caused by A lot potential things. For an older pet, I would think about infection, heart disease, fungal disease, asthma, or even cancer for the older ones. I would do what your Dr recommended and definitely recheck if no improvement. I do think though a chest x-rays for an older pet would be very helpful. Good luck
