Why is my older poodle suddenly snarling, nipping, and territorial?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Poodle | Male | neutered | 11 years and 3 months old | 11 lbs

My 9-year old mini poodle has begun snarling and nipping. He will beg for "pets" and all of a sudden snarl (and won't stop); has become very territorial. I've become frightened to pet him for fear of his bad behavior.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! These types of behavior can improve though this does require in person training with the help of a qualified dog trainer. I would encourage you to contact a dog trainer that can work with you and Lancelot in person to really take care of this behavior. The sooner these behaviors are dealt with, the more likely it is that you can improve and resolve them. Good luck and have a great day!
