My dog has B. gibsoni, no symptoms. Is he a lifelong carrier?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 8 months old

My dog had b.gibsoni positive on 12 may 2018 and 24 July I again went for blood smear test where again he came positive with b.gibsoni but has no symptoms of any illness and is active in all ways his platelets were 140000 and weight is normal 38 kg... I was looking on internet about this b.gibsoni but did not get what this statement means " In many cases, treatment is frustrating, low levels of parasites remain, and a chronic subclinical carrier state develops." And when this will come negative

" In many cases, treatment is frustrating, low levels of parasites remain, and a chronic subclinical carrier state develops." This means that many cases never become negative, that they will stay positive for b. gibsoni and become a carrier without symptoms of disease.

There is no garantee that your dog will ever be negative for b.gibsoni. He may become a carrier that shows no signs of illness and can live very well with that. I would not worry so much, just monitor your dog and have a wellness blood check done every 6 months. There are many dogs out there with a subclinical b. gibsoni infections that lead a very happy and healthy life.
