My cat's cough is worsening, but vets can't find a cause. What's next?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 3 years and 9 months old | 9.2 lbs

one of my cats has been coughing a lot. I had taken her to a vet several times and did x-ray, blood test, etc. However they couldn't find any thing through those examinations. She had been taking a antibiotic for 4-5 months already and she is not taking it anymore(doesn't want swallow). Because of that, I feel her coughing is getting worse. Please advise.

If a round of antibiotics did not cure Tsuyu's cough, then it may not be caused by a bacteria. Other possible causes of cough include heart disease, lung parasites, allergies, asthma, fungal infections, pharyngeal polyp, among many other things. I would recommend discussing these concerns with her primary veterinarian. Here is an article that discusses coughing in cats in much more detail: https://www.petcoach.co/cat/condition/coughing/
