Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Staffordshire Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 4 years and 6 months old | 76 lbs

My dog (4 year old healthy & vibrant staffordshire terrier until 2 months ago). Suddenly stopped eating and drinking and became lethargic and going from 108 lbs to 94 pounds in a month. All tests were normal except his thyroid level was low. He’s been on synthroid about 3 weeks and some days we see him perk up and play. 3 days ago he began looking Like his breathing was difficult only when he lies down. He breathes in normally, but to exhale it comes out in short bursts and his whole body shak.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! An abnormal breathing pattern can be a sign of many conditions such as pneumonia, bronchitis, heart disease, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Rocky evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics to be performed include thoracic radiographs and bloodwork. Treatment would be dependent on findings. Good luck and have a good day!
