My dog's stool is red after switching food. Did I transition too fast?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Poodle | Male | neutered | 6 years and 6 months old | 25 lbs

In my previous question the photo wasn’t clear, but I had noticed a red tint to the stool so I rubbed some on the newspaper and it was red. My dog was showing signs of improvement from bloody diarrhea and was starting to have normal stool with antibiotics so I started slowly giving him dry dog food again. Did I transition him too soon to cause this? He has 4 more days left on the metronidazole.

As long as the stool was normal or close to normal, you can begin the transition back to the regular diet. Ideally, it should take 7-10 days to transition back. See how Teddy does tomorrow. If the stool is getting looser or more bloody, go back to a bland diet until it isn't, then restart the transition. Call your vet also and let him or her know that Teddy has loose/bloody stool again. A recheck may be recommended.
