My rescued tegu fears humans. How can I build her trust for handling?

Hiya! I’ve just rescued a tegu. We’re unsure of her age but she’s almost fully grown. But she hates being handled. In fact it’s almost if she’s frightened of humans. What can I do to help her trust me? She spends a lot of time out her Viv and I sit on the floor so she can come over if she wishes to. Normally for 3-4 hours a day.

I commend you for rescuing her. She's gorgeous! You can only do what you are doing now. Let her acclimate to you at her pace. Move slowly around her and speak softly. Continue to sit by her for longer periods of time. Use treats and food to entice her closer and closer. Don't force her to do what she doesn't want to do. This may result in a nasty bite or scratch. Be patient and be consistent. Above all, be careful.
