My senior dog has megaesophagus. Why did it suddenly appear?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 9 years and 6 months old | 35 lbs

My 9 1/2-year-old dog with hypothyroidism that is currently under control was just diagnosed with megaesophagus. My question is how did it just show up? She has been eating and drinking with no problems until Friday.

Megaesophagus is not something that suddenly appears unless it is congenital. THis could have developed ofer a long period of time and your dog was able to compensate so you would not have noticed any problem By Friday it may have just enlarged to the point where Sarena was not able to compensate and then you noticed that she hat trouble eating.
