My senior dog vomits green liquid and drools daily. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 85 lbs

My 13 year loud dog was on pain pills for arthritis for about 2 months. She started vomiting, so the vet took her off of them. But for the last 3 month's she vomits 1 to 2 times a day slimmy greenish stomach acid with really thick drool. I'm not sure if it could be a more serious illness that I'm not aware of, she is eating, drinking and going to the bathroom just fine. should I have a blood panel done?

It is not normal for a dog to vomit every day. You really need to take Storm back to your vet for an exam of the gastro-intestinal tract, which will include bloodwork as well as possibly and ultrasound or xrays. She may have a stomach ulcer, tumor or chronic gastritis or other intestinal or gastric problem and that needs to be investigated. Pleased make an appointment today.

Poor Eli! I would recommend to talk with your veterinarian about next steps. Some of these dogs will respond to a special diet for possible inflammatory bowel disease. Some of these pets can have parasites that need to be addressed. Many of these dogs will go on to have an abdominal ultrasound to look for any signs of a tumor or other abnormalities. Some pets will even go on for an endoscope with biopsies. Best to consult your vet about what next steps make the most sense for Eli. I hope this helps to point you in the right direction. Please feel free to post any additional questions!

Unfortunately diarrhea can be a sign of many different diseases, and since Misty has not responded to the initial treatment I'd recommend rechecking with your veterinarian. Liver disease, pancreatitis, food sensitivity, Addison's disease, and inflammatory bowel disease are just a few of the many diseases that can cause recurrent diarrhea and vomiting. Your veterinarian might recommend checking a blood panel as the next step.

I would recommend having Misty evaluated by her veterinarian. And intermittent vomiting and diarrhea is not a normal part of old age and should not last several weeks. Vomiting and diarrhea can be caused by tocsin ingestion, parasites, pancreatitis or G.I. disease, or some endocrine disorders. Her vet will perform a physical exam and then discuss possible diagnostic testing they may recommend depending on exam findings. Many conditions are still easily treatable even in older dogs so I recommend getting misty checked soon to get her feeling better. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Based on the information you provided, I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at her so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I would have her blood tested and go from there. She may be in pain / discomfort from whatever is going on. I hope this helps!
