My IBD dog has gas pains during food transition. Should I change food?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 7 years and 9 months old | 5 lbs

Pooka has been getting sharp gas pains the last 2 mornings. He has IBD and suffered a bad flare up back in mid May. Since then he has been on a boiled potato/chicken/egg diet. We are gradually switching him back to his z/d dog food, and ever since we reached 75% dog food 25% homemade, he’s been acting uncomfortable in the mornings. He’s still hungry when it’s time to eat. He’s been pooping pretty regular, but he’s definitely in pain. Should we go back to homemade food only?

It sounds like Pooka may not be quite ready to handle the z/d. You could try going back to 50/50 for a few days and see if he improves. If he still experiences discomfort from gas pains in a couple days, then you may want to have him re-evaluated by the vet to see if there is another cause for his discomfort.
