My senior cat keeps laying by his water bowl. Is it a medical issue?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 18 years and 6 months old | 9.5 lbs

Hi 2+ years ago, after Tony’s life long friend(my other cat) passed away, he began laying by his water bowl. he sees the vet for senior blood work every 6 mths, he does not have kidney disease but does take amlodopine for hi blood pressure, methimazole for hyperthyroidism, & tumil k potassium supplement. But this water bowl behavior started before he began taking these meds. My vet can’t explain his obsession with the water bowl. Could there be any other medical reason in your opinion? thx!!

I would say it is just a habit. Maybe the area by the waterbowl is nice and cool in this heat, or he likes to have his water nearby. It could also be that that may be the one spot in your dwelling where there is a particular draft or smell he likes or the least draft. Cats are wonderful but sometimes strange creatures. I would not worry too much about that.
