Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | 13 years and 6 months old
When a cat drinks a lot of water and has trouble pooping even though he eats soft food with Miralax is given lactulose once every other day and the poop still comes out somewhat hard be caused by slow kidney function? Also medicine effects take on average 72hrs to start working or leave the system.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. What you are describing (hard feces despite drinking and peeing, and drinking a lot of water) can definitely be caused by kidney disease, and that would be the number one concern. Other concerns would be diabetes, hyperthyroidism, megacolon, or possibly cancer. In terms of your medications comment, all medications have different times for how long they take to kick in, and how long they last. This can be changed based on hydration, age, kidney and liver function, and overall health status. It sounds like Jay might need to see a vet, based on your questions. Best of luck with Jay!
