Why is my 16-year-old cat having poop accidents outside the litter box?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 15 years and 11 months old | 14 lbs

My female cat, who will be 16 shortly, has had poop accidents in my room where she stays, but now it's becoming more often. I have not noticed any urine in the litter box, and I haven't smelled or seen any urine in the room. She is still eating. She's also still jumping up onto the bed to lie with me and cuddle. But she doesn't stay as long, jumps down to get water and then lies on the floor awhile.

Hi. Poor Zuzu. Usually when kitties defecate, or urinate, outside the box, they are trying to tell us something, if she isn't urinating, that is definitely a concern. Most likely though, she is going somewhere or she would be a lot sicker. I recommend getting her seen as soon as you can. In older kitties, some of the common problems we see include kidney disease, high thyroid, cardiac disease, diabetes, UTI's, or cancers. So in a case like this, blood and urine will help us rule a lot of those out. So to start I recommend an exam and labwork. Good luck
