My dog has liver tumors. Can anti-inflammatories or herbs help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | 9 years and 6 months old | 45 lbs

My 9 yr old Nor Elkhound / Husky cross has non hemangiosarcom of the liver (she had her spleen removed) . The histology saw spindle cells - mitotic index up to 15. I am giving her Chinese herbs - do you think antinflamatories are of much help to reduce vascularization of tumors. She has several small ones on her liver. She is fine now - active, happy, affectionate, good appetite etc.Chinese herbs are Yun Zhi (turkey tail mushroom), HSA compound, Ge Xia Zhu Yu Tang. what do you think of these?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! While in theory anti-inflammatory medications can help to reduce the blood vessels feeding the tumor, this is only when combined with a chemotherapeutic agent such as cyclophosphamide given in a metronomic fashion. However, we have not found this to result in a better outcome in patients with metastasis (spread of the tumor). While those herbs are unlikely to be harmful, they unlikely to help. You can always however try the herbs and focus on her quality of life at this time. I would encourage you to seek a consultation with a veterinary oncologist that can review the case in detail and make recommendations. Good luck!
