How do I get my cat to stop scratching my mattress? Spraying him with water doesn't work. Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 1 year and 11 months old | 4 lbs

Phoenix likely is scratching your mattress because he likes the feel of the mattress, or because he gets attention (Stop that!). The easiest way to keep him from scratching the mattress is to block access to the room in which the mattress is. He will likely not stop scratching it on command. You can try to put two sheets on it so that the feeling is much different for him and then maybe he loses interest. Sorry that I do not have any better suggestions, but once a cat finds a place irresistible to scratch on, it is almost impossible to stop him.
