My dog is limping, front paw swollen, but no injury. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | 11 years and 6 months old | 70 lbs

70 pound shepherd/lab mix has been limping for a couple days. Don't remember an injury but right front paw is puffy and swollen. He can walk but can't put much weight on affected paw.

Hi! Thanks for entrusting us with Jasper's care today! Lameness can be a sign of a few things that range from a muscle sprain to even a fracture. Knowing that the paw is swollen, it could be an injury specific to the paw. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian so that this can be further assessed which will likely include radiographs. Treatment will be dependent on findings though at the very least pain control medications can be prescribed. Good luck! Hoping for a speedy recovery!
