Is a red raised spot with dark center normal on my spayed puppy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 5 months and 6 days old | 18 lbs

My puppy is about 4 1/2 months old last month she had been spayed from that she got a soreoma. This got as big as a golf ball but then went away on its on. Now a couple weeks after her soreoma went away. She has a dime to nickel size Red spot sore. Its raised and the center of it is dark in color almost black. What would you recommend?

It looks like a bit of suture reaction - this is very common and goes away on it's own. As long as there isn't anything coming out (like pus) from the area and it's not bothering her, just leave it alone and keep an eye on it. If she's lethargic, has poor appetite, is trying to lick it, or has any discharge, she should go back to the vet to see if she needs antibiotics or other testing. But 9 times out of 10 (probably even better than that) these need no treatment - it's just the body dealing with having something inside that shouldn't be there. The sutures will dissolve over the next month or so and the reaction will go away. I hope that helps and good luck!
