My 2-month puppy won't focus or listen. How can I train him?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 2 days old | 6 lbs

My blue heller/rat terrier mix is 2 months old. He doesn't feel energized to learn and has had trouble paying attention. We've attempted to train him before and after feedings with little luck. He's naturally curious and sweet, but can play rough at random times during the day. How can I motivate him to listen and follow direction?

At two months your puppy is still a very young baby, comparable more to a 1 1/2 year old child. He will not be able to concentrate for long. Best make sure he has all his vaccinations and once that is done book a puppy kinder garden or school with him. Until then, just teach him the word "no" for things he should not do. That is plenty to learn for such a small baby.
