My cat has kidney disease & seizures. When is it time to say goodbye?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Siamese | Male | neutered | 9 lbs

My 19 y/o cat has stage 4 kidney disease. He's having seizures (passes out,no convulsing, mild face twitching). When he comes to,he simply carries on with whatever he was planning on doing. We do sub-q fluids (100ml/day), he still eats, drinks, uses litter,he's weak but not lethargic. I just want to know how long (weeks,months...) seizure activity can continue? He does not seem ready to go yet (not in pain, happy). What should I look for (seizures don't seem to bother him) to make "the" decision?

I am so sorry that Toby is so ill. Actually as long as he is happy there is no need to let him go. Seizures usually do not hurt, but they can make tired. I think you should just "listen" to him. One day he will stop eating drinking and having fun. When that day comes, you can give him the gift of painless relief of his suffering. But until then there is no reason to end his life. Listen to Toby, he will tell you when it is time. I wish you many more months and hopefully years with him!
