My dog's stitches tore. How can I prevent infection and aid healing?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | unneutered | 3 years and 3 months old | 77 lbs

Someone beat my dog so this happened. I already brought him to the vet but the vets in my place aren’t really good. So, I wanted to ask for advices on what I should do to prevent it from making it worse and for it to be better. The stitches are torn apart for now.

The wounds loiok to be healing from the inside and I recommend applying medical grade manuka honey to all open wounds twice daily until they are smooth, pink and shiny and no longer moist/sticky. Fly repellent such as advantix and an elizabethan coller to prevent him from licking and irritating the wounds would also be recoommended

The wound should be surgically cleaned and the ends sutured to reduce the gap. The centre of the wound will likely be left to heal itself, your vet may wish to apply sterile medical grade honey and a wound dressing or may prefer to leave open to the air depending on if any bone/ligament is exposed and the risk of localised infection
