My dog freaks out at loud voices. Are anxiety meds or earplugs safe?

Our collie is freaked out by my best friends voice and laugh which makes it very stressful if we’re all together. Can you suggest any ear plugs or anxiety tablets which might stop Dan freaking out when poor Ginny comes round? Thank you Lindsay

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I'm sorry to hear that Danny is reactive to your friend's voice and laugh. You can approach this from two sides - you can politely ask your friend to lower their voice around Dan to help him feel more comfortable. You can also consult your primary care veterinarian about a light sedative medication that would be safe for him, which you could give him in advance when you know that your friend will be around. There are medications such as trazodone or gabapentin, that may help to lightly sedate him and keep him calm. I would not recommend ear plugs. I hope this is helpful!
