My dog has an eye ulcer. Why stop oral pred but humans use drops?

Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Female | spayed | 7 years and 9 months old | 14.5 lbs

Hi quick question why if my dog gets an eye ulcer do I hv to stop her 1mg 1 + 1/2 daily oral pred But when I had a scratched eye last christmas and I was given pred eye drops along with antibiotic drops ? Just being a curious George lol

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! That is an excellent question! The main reason is that the topical (to put in the eye) prednisolone does not have good systemic penetration so it has more of the anti-inflammatory effects of it without the immunosuppressive part of it. For this reason, we are not concerned about the infection getting worse. Good luck and have a great day!
