Is 10mg Zyrtec too high a dose for my 17lb dog's skin allergies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | spayed | 9 years and 6 months old | 18 lbs

Hello, Among other treatments for her skin, my veterinarian recommended that I give mollie a 10mg tablet of Zyrtec twice a day. She weighs 17.1 lbs. when I researched it, it seems like this is a very high dose for her. Should I do only 1/2 a tablet twice a day? Thanks!

The published dose for Zyrtec in dogs is 1 mg/kg which would be 7.7 mg for Mollie. Since the tablet only comes in 10 mg, your vet probably wanted to round so that Mollie wasn't underdosed. I wouldn't recommend changing the dose without talking to your vet first.
