My cat won't pee in the box. What alternative litter should I try?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 3 years and 1 month old | 8 lbs

My 3 year old cat will poop in the litter box but will not pee in the box. The Vet has checked her and she doesn't have an infection, so we've determined it's behavioral. My theory is that she doesn't like her litter - she doesn't cover her poop, she is in and out of the box in 30 seconds. However, she will pee on rugs or other soft things and spend time digging and covering it up in those areas. I'd like to try a different sort of litter (other than sandy litter), but not sure what to try?

Feline Pine and Yesterday's News are both more "pellet-like" options. I actually like these two brands a lot as they have the added benefit of not containing any additives or chemicals. Good luck! Thanks for asking Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I'm sorry to hear that Penny is urinating outside of the litterbox, and it is certainly possible that it is behavioral. I'm not sure what litter you are using now, but great brands are Purina Tidy Cats, Scoop Away and Arm & Hammer Clump and Seal. You may also try purchasing Feliway diffuser which can help calm her and maybe help tame her behavioral issues. I hope this is helpful!
