My unvaccinated puppy scratched me. Am I safe? Do I need a doctor?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I have a 46-day old lab puppy that is not vaccinated yet. I have not taken him outside except for the backyard of my garden which is clean and safe. I got mild scratches from playing with him without any bleeding, he didn't bite me. I washed the scratches with a soap, then applied hydrogen peroxide on the area just for safety. Am I safe? Do I need to go to the doctor or anything?

Hi there and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Scratches are a little less concerning than a bite, especially if there was no bleeding. Sounds like you performed first aide to your wounds well, but if your scratch marks do not heal or worsen, then yes please see your MD. Puppies can begin getting their initial vaccines around 8 weeks of age so I would make sure schedule an appointment with his veterinarian for this soon. I hope this helps!
