My 8-week puppy ignores commands when excited. How can I train him?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered

Jack is about 8 weeks old. He doesn't listen to commands when he's very excited. He knows 'stay' pretty well and stays when treats and toys are tossed about in multiple ways and even listens when other dogs are barking or music is playing or frogs are hopping about but in certain things, like insects running around, he doesn't listen at all-totally ignores me. Will this get better with age or do I have to train him some other way?

Hi and thanks for posting on PetCoach! Attention span will get better with age, but implementing a new training technique can help grab and keep his attention too. One simple technique can you try is introducing the 'watch me' command. Say "watch me", point to yourself, and when Jack looks at you, give a high value reward such as very tasty treat. Practice this technique daily. I have linked a helpful video to help you get started. https://youtu.be/BgGi2CqQ8Xw I hope this helps!

Jack is a baby. Jack does not have to listen to commands at this age. Training for commands does not normally start until 6 months of age. Jack needs puppy hood which is doing exactly what he is doing.
