I have been feeing my 7 month old mini Aussie Zignature duck dry food and his stools just never seem to be formed. I don’t know if I need to add a different fiber to help slow the transit time down so it can bulk up or just change his food all together. We had his stool checked and he doesn’t have any parasites. Please help

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your puppy. Diet and parasites are the most common causes of loose stool in young puppies. If his stool is clear of any parasitic, bacterial or viral infection, then I would consider a new diet. I would consider a sensitive stomach formula such as Purina ProPlan Sensitive Skin and Stomach. Gradually transition to the new food over 5 or so days. If this does not help within 2 weeks, then you may want to consider a prescription low fat and highly digestible diet from his veterinarian. I hope this information helps!

Hi there! Any abrupt change in routine diet could potentially cause soft stool, so adding a third meal could potentially cause the bit of diarrhea you are seeing. If it doesn't clear up in a day or so, please bring Ziggy to the vet to have him checked for other conditions, such as parasites (worms). You could also add a little plain white rice to his food as this tends to bind things up a bit. Good luck, and I hope Ziggy's poo firms up soon! :)

Yes changing food suddenly can cause dietary indiscretion and loose stool. Activated charcoal really isn't indicated here because there is no toxicity concern. I would recommend feeding him a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice or cottage cheese for a few days, then slowly transitioning him back to his regular dog food. You can also add 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin in his food daily for added fiber and promotion of solid stools. As long as he is still playful and happy then you can wait things out and see if his stomach is able to settle down naturally. If he is still having loose stool after 24-48 hrs then it is best to take him to your vet for further treatment (i.e. antibiotics).

It could be the food, perhaps try to continue feeding this brand for another couple of weeks and monitor the stools. My other question would be if he has been wormed , it is very important that he is treated for parasites that he could have caught from his mum, or when at the breeder. Ideally a feacal exam should be performed. If this has already been done, you could consider giving him some probiotics but I would wait another week to rule out the diet change or parasites as a possible cause. Btw he is very very very cute ! Hope this helps !
