Why does my kitten have black specks around her eyes? Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed

Our kitten has black specks around her inner eyes. And discoloration. I'm wondering if this is a health concern or something normal. Will that discoloration stay or go away? No other symptoms or discharge that I know of.

What a cute kitten! We can sometimes see tears from the eye turn a blackish color if they accumulate on the face and dry, they become oxidized and turn dark or rust colored. I would recommend wiping around your kitty's eyes with a warm wet washcloth a few times away to clean off any excess tears/discharge. If you notice any redness to the eyes, discharge that starts to look green or yellow, sneezing/coughing, lethargy or decreased appetite, then I would recommend bringing Mango into the vet for an examination.

Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The pictures you sent were a little bit blurry, but the areas where her eyes should be appear very abnormal. It is unclear as to what exactly is going on with the pictures alone. The black covering her eyes could be a thick later of dried ocular discharge from a severe viral eye infection or could be a mass, tumor, or other infection of the eye. I would recommend your kitten see a veterinarian as soon as possible so they can take a closer look here to see what exactly is going on. A good exam with a veterinarian should be able to determine what the cause is. I hope this helps and thanks for posting!
