My senior dachshund wobbles, snaps, and has eye issues. Is it retinal detachment?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | spayed | 7 years and 11 months old | 12 lbs

We recently adopted a special needs 8 YO dachshund. She has an eye issue in both eyes along with a wobble when she walks and sways side to side when standing. Vet said her retinas fluctuate. Is this the same as retina detachment? She will snap at anything put in front of her including my hand...so I let her know it’s me first by petting her on back of her head before she sees my hand coming toward her. In her records it shows she had very high fever a year ago. Thank you!

With Retinal Detachment dogs are blind. I am not sure that is what is going on with Cassie but if you take her to an ophthalmologist they should be able to determine the cause of her eyes. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
