Dog skin issues after Cytopoint? Best flea prevention for allergies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | spayed | 9 years and 6 months old | 18 lbs

having skin issues again 3 weeks after cytopoint injection. Is there a flea preventative or repellent? Vet couldn’t find fleas on her but said might be flea allergy. He said the flea has to bite her for the treatment to work but when it bites her it will cause an allergic reaction. Trying to get a second opinion until her upcoming appointment. Is there a preventative and what is the best flea treatment/preventative? (She is on hp diet and cytopoint)

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! From your pictures it looks like Mollie has either a bacterial or yeast skin infection. The cytopoint works great for scratching but will not work in the face of an infection. I do agree that Mollie and any animal with allergies should be on a monthly flea preventative. I like Bravecto, Nexgard, Simparica, Seresto collar or Advantix II. As a repellent I would choose the Seresto collar or Advantix II as they flea should die before biting Mollie. I would also add in an Omega 3 fish oil and an antihistamine like Zyrtec or Claritin to your treatment plan. I like that you are using the cytopoint and Royal Canin HP. Good luck!
